We Gather

(Because the singing of hymns is discouraged during this period of pandemic, you are invited to hum or meditate on the verses printed below.)

We light this candle as a sign of the coming light of Christ, who is called the Son of the Most High,

and of whose kingdom there will be no end.

About the hour of Christ’s coming no one knows; therefore keep awake, for you do not know when the time will come. Hear the voice of one crying out in the wilderness: Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight. With John the Baptist we testify to Christ the light, so that all might believe through him. With Mary, we pray: Let it be with us according to your word. For nothing will be impossible with God.

The Christ candle is lighted.

Now fear not, for there is good news of great joy for all people: to us is born this day in Bethlehem a Savior, the Messiah, the Lord.

Heaven and earth will pass away, but the Word of God endures forever.

*CAROL  Once in Royal David’s City

Once in royal David’s city

stood a lowly cattle shed,

where a mother laid her baby

in a manger for his bed.

Mary was that mother mild;

Jesus Christ her little child.

And our eyes at last shall see Him,

through his own redeeming love;

For that Child so dear and gentle

is our Lord in heaven above;

And Christ leads his children on

to the place where He is gone.

Do not be afraid; for see--I bring you good news of great joy.

To us is born this day in the city of David a Savior, the Messiah, the Lord.

This will be a sign for you:  you will find a child wrapped in cloth and lying in a manger.

Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace!

Let us go now to Bethlehem.

*CAROL   O Come, All Ye Faithful

O come, all ye faithful,

joyful and triumphant,

O come ye, O come ye

to Bethlehem!

Come, and behold Him,

born the King of angels!

O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him,

Christ the Lord.

Sing choirs of angels,

sing in exultation!

Sing, all ye citizens

of heaven above!

Glory to God,

all glory in the highest!

O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him,

Christ the Lord.

Yea, Lord, we greet Thee,

born this happy morning,

Jesus to Thee be all glory given:

Word of the Father,

now in flesh appearing!

O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him,

O come, let us adore Him,

Christ the Lord.

Living God, on this holy night we gather--to stand with shepherds, amazed at your glory; to sing with angels, rejoicing in your work; to wait with Joseph, trusting in your promise; to sit with Mary, cradling your love. May the good news of this night inspire us  to tell the world of our great joy: for to us is born a Savior, the Messiah, the Lord. Glory and praise to you forever! Amen.

*CAROL  Angels We Have Heard on High

Angels we have heard on high,

sweetly singing o’er the plains,

And the mountains in reply,

echoing their joyous strains.

Glo-ria in excelsis Deo;

Glo-ria in excelsis Deo.

Come to Bethlehem and see;

Him whose birth the angels sing;

Come adore on bended knee;

Christ the Lord, the newborn King.

Glo-ria in excelsis Deo;

Glo-ria in excelsis Deo.

Matthew 1:18-25

Luke 2:1-7

CAROL  O Little Town of Bethlehem

O little town of Bethlehem,

how still we see thee lie!

Above thy deep and dreamless sleep

the silent stars go by.

Yet in thy dark streets shineth

the everlasting light;

the hopes and fears of all the years

are met in thee tonight.

For Christ is born of Mary

and, gathered all above,

while mortals sleep,

the angels keep

their watch of wondering love.

O morning stars, together

proclaim the holy birth,

and praises sing to God the king,

and peace to all on earth.

How silently, how silently,

the wondrous gift is given!

So God imparts to human hearts

the blessings of God’s heaven.

No ear may hear his coming,

but in this world of sin,

Where meek souls will receive him,

still the dear Christ enters in.

O holy child of Bethlehem,

descend to us, we pray;

cast out our sin and enter in;

be born in us today.

We hear the Christmas angels

the great glad tidings tell;

O come to us; abide with us,

our Lord Emmanuel!

Luke 2:8-20

CAROL  Away in a Manger

Away in a manger,

no crib for his bed,

the little Lord Jesus

laid down his sweet head.

The stars in the bright sky

looked down where he lay,

the little Lord Jesus

asleep on the hay.

The cattle are lowing;

the poor baby wakes,

but little Lord Jesus,

no crying he makes.

I love thee, Lord Jesus;

look down from the sky,

and stay by my side

until morning is nigh.

Be near me, Lord Jesus;

I ask thee to stay

close by me forever

and love me, I pray.

Bless all the dear children

in thy tender care,

and fit us for heaven

to live with thee there.

Response to the Word

As the angels brought songs, may we bring our gifts and praise. As the shepherds brought reports of their visions, may we bring testimonies of God’s vision in our lives. As the sages brought gifts, may we bring our gifts to share at the manger of Jesus.

OFFERTORY   What Child Is This?

Joelle Gray, soloist

We give you thanks, Holy One, for the world of wonder you have made--forest and field, sea and sky, and for the gift of grace that you have given--a little child, lying in a manger. Receive these gifts of tenderness and love, of gratitude and praise, and use them for your glory; in the name of Jesus Christ, the child of Bethlehem, we pray. Amen.

So bring Him incense,

gold and myrrh;

come, one and all,

to own Him.

The King of kings

salvation brings;

let loving hearts

enthrone Him.

This, this is Christ the King,

whom shepherds guard

and angels sing;

Haste, haste to bring Him laud,

the Babe, the son of Mary!

You are invited to surround the sanctuary as candles are received to share the light of Christ, masked and keeping social distance.

John 1:1-5

*CAROL  Silent Night, Holy Night

Silent night! Holy night!

All is calm, all is bright

’round yon virgin mother

and child!

Holy infant, so tender and mild,

sleep in heavenly peace,

sleep in heavenly peace.

Silent night! Holy night!

Shepherds quake at the sight.

Glories stream

from heaven afar,

heav'nly hosts sing: “Alleluia!

Christ the Savior is born!

Christ the Savior is born!”

Silent night! Holy night!

Son of God, love’s pure light

radiant beams

from Thy holy face

with the dawn

of redeeming grace,

Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth!

Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth!

(Lift candles)

Silent night! Holy night!

Wondrous star, lend thy light;

with the angels let us sing

"Alleluia" to our King:

“Christ the Savior is born!

Christ the Savior is born.”

(Please extinguish candles after the prayer.)

The Light of the World

*CAROL   Joy to the World

Joy to the World!

The Lord is come;

Let earth receive her King;

Let every heart

prepare him room,

And heaven and nature sing,

And heaven and nature sing,

And heaven, and heaven and nature sing.

Joy to the world!

The Savior reigns;

Let us our songs employ;

While fields and floods,

Rocks, hills, and plains

Repeat the sounding joy,

Repeat the sounding joy,

Repeat, repeat the sounding joy.

He rules the world

with truth and grace,

And makes the nations prove;

The glories of his righteousness,

And wonders of his love,

And wonders of his love,

And wonders, wonders of his love.

A child has been born for us. God’s grace has been given to us. From a stable in Bethlehem our savior has come.

We have seen the glory of the Lord, revealed in the face of the Christ child. We can hardly contain our amazement.

Tell the world. Treasure the story. Ponder it in your heart.

We will glorify and praise God, for all we have heard and seen! Rejoice! Rejoice! Christ has come!
