WELCOME

CALL TO WORSHIP

Come and know that God is good!

We come seeking God’s shelter.

Come and know God’s mercy.

We come seeking wholeness and God’s peace.

Come and abide in God’s steadfast love.

Receive us as we are, as we come to worship you, O God.

OPENING HYMN    No. 645

Sing Praise to God, Who Reigns Above

Sing praise to God who reigns above,

the God of all creation,

the God of power, the God of love,

the God of our salvation.

With healing balm may soul is filled,

and every faithless murmur stilled:

to God all praise and glory!

What God's almighty power has made

God's gracious mercy keepeth;

by morning glow or evening shade

God's watchful eye ne'er sleepeth.

Within the kingdom of God's might,

lo! all is just and all is right:

to God all praise and glory!

The Lord is never far away,

but, through all grief distressing,

an ever-present help and stay,

our peace and joy and blessing,

as with a mother's tender hand

God gently leads the chosen band:

to God all praise and glory!

Thus all my toilsome way along

I sing aloud thy praises,

that all may hear the grateful song

my voice unwearied raises.

Be joyful in the Lord, my heart;

both soul and body, take your part:

to God all praise and glory!

CALL TO CONFESSION

The psalmist models a transparent faith with these words:

search me, O God, and know my heart;

test me and know my thoughts.

See if there is any wicked way in me,

and lead me in the way everlasting.

We express our longing for God’s leading by our own transparent confession.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

God of mercy, we confess that we do not trust you with our lives. We hurt others with our words and with our silence, with our deeds and our inaction. We block out your still-speaking word with busyness and traditions. Forgive us. Open our hearts to know you and follow in your way, today and all the days of our lives. Amen.

In humility, let us lift our silent prayers to God for the brokenness of this world and for the needs of our community and our hearts.

Please refer to the deacon’s prayer list.

God, in your mercy, hear our prayers & forgive us. Amen.

Silence

ASSURANCE OF GOD WITH US

Beloved of God – hear the good news. God forgives us.

God calls us home to abide in the shelter and nurture

of God’s faithful love, now and always. Praise be to God!

SONG OF RESPONSE     No. 240

Alleluia, alleluia!

Give thanks to the risen Lord.

Alleluia, alleluia!

Give praise to his name.

Come let us praise the living God,

Joyfully sing to our Savior. [Refrain]

SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

As God has given us peace through Christ, let us pass the peace of Christ to each other. The peace of Christ be with you all.

And also with you.

We Respond

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH

We believe that our lives are held within the encircling love of God, who knows our names

and recognizes our deepest needs.

We believe that Christ is the divine Child of the living God, and that his grace is like living waters

that can never be exhausted.

We believe in the birthing, renewing, enabling Spirit of God who yearns over our welfare as a mother yearns for her child.

We believe that God is in the arid desert as well as in green pastures, and that hard times and disciplines are also loving gifts.

We believe that our journey has a purpose and a destination, and that our path leads to a human glory we cannot yet imagine.

We believe that in the church we are fellow pilgrims on the road, and that we are called to love one another as God loves us.

This is our faith, and we are humbled to profess in Jesus the Christ. Amen.

CLOSING HYMN  No. 634

To God Be the Glory

To God be the glory;

great things he has done!

So loved he the world

that he gave us his Son,

who yielded his life

an atonement for sin,

and opened the lifegate

that all may go in.

Refrain:

Praise the Lord,

praise the Lord;

let the earth hear his voice!

Praise the Lord, praise the Lord;

let the people rejoice!

O come to the Father

through Jesus the Son,

and give him the glory:

great things he has done!

Great things he has taught us;

great things he has done,

and great our rejoicing

through Jesus the Son;

but purer and higher

and greater will be

our wonder, our transport,

when Jesus we see. [Refrain]
