We Gather

CENTERING WORDS

Wilderness, exile, tribulation, rejoicing: Your way runs through all of these, O God. May we prepare this way anew.

PRELUDE

LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH

We light this candle as a sign of the coming light of Christ, who is called the Son of the Most High,

and of whose kingdom there will be no end.

About the hour of Christ’s coming no one knows; therefore keep awake, for you do not know when the time will come.

[the second candle is lit]

Hear the voice of one crying out in the wilderness:

Prepare the way of the Lord, make his paths straight.

Heaven and earth will pass away, but the Word of God endures forever.

ADVENT HYMN  No. 105

People, Look East

(Because the singing of hymns is discouraged during this period of pandemic, you are invited to meditate on verses 1 & 5 below.)

People, look east. The time is near

of the crowning of the year.

Make your house fair as you are able;

trim the hearth and set the table.

People, look east and sing today:

Love, the Guest, is on the way.

Angels, announce with shouts of mirth

Christ who brings new life to earth.

Set every peak and valley humming

with the word, the Lord is coming.

People, look east and sing today:

Love, the Lord, is on the way.

CALL TO PRAYERS

Prepare the way of the Lord! He will bring to light the things now hidden in darkness, and will disclose the purposes of the heart. Therefore, in the light of Christ let us be reconciled to God.

PRAYERS OF CONFESSION & INTERCESSION

God, we are confident you are coming, bringing a world where all will be made right.

Calm our anxiety, strengthen our patience, and keep our hope aflame, as we work towards, and wait for, your new day.

Silence

Sometimes, we are not ready for things to be made new.

Help us, God,to imagine the new earth that you envision for our world. Help us see ourselves in it. Give us wisdom and courage to hasten the coming of your day. Amen.

Silence

ASSURANCE OF GOD WITH US

God is patient. Think of this as salvation. God speaks peace.  All will be made well. Amen.

SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

Just as God speaks peace to the people, let us greet one another with words of Christ’s peace, as we embody the new world to come. The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you!

And also with you.

CELEBRATION OF THE LORD’S SUPPER

The Invitation

The Great Prayer of Thanksgiving

Now, in this holy season of Advent, God comes to be with you.

God comes to be with you as well.

As we begin our journey to Bethlehem,

let us open our hearts to God.

For God will fill them with strength and courage

for the journey.

Let us join our voices in singing praise to God.

We will lift glad songs of joy to the One who is coming to us.

Call:             Lord, hear our prayer,

Response:  Come, Jesus, come!

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

The Words of Institution

The Communion

Musical Meditation

Prayer following Communion

Holy Creator, Bread of Life, Everlasting Salvation,

a light shines in the night and the night will not overcome it. In this meal we have been nurtured and strengthened, the light of your love rekindled within. We will be bold to carry this light into the world, watching for Christ’s coming, and praising you in all we do. Amen.

OUR GIFTS OF SACRIFICE and THANKSGIVING

Invitation

“The LORD will give what is good,” says the psalmist.

Let us share our tithes and offerings, in thanksgiving

for what we have already received, and in the sure hope of an abundant world to come.

Thank you for sending your offerings. They make a great difference to our church’s work in the world. First Sunday loose plate offering benefits the Deacons Fund.

Musical Meditation

Prayer of Dedication

O God, who restores and makes new, let these gifts prepare the way: for good news proclaimed, for people comforted, and for the earth tended.

Through our giving, may all partake of an abundant yield of peace. We believe it will be so. Amen.

ADVENT HYMN   No. 87

Comfort, Comfort Now My People

(Because the singing of hymns is discouraged during this period of pandemic, you are invited to meditate on the hymn below.)

“Comfort, comfort now my people;

tell of peace!” So says our God.

“Comfort those who sit in darkness

mourning under sorrow’s load.

To my people now proclaim

that my pardon waits for them!

Tell them that their sins I cover,

and their warfare now is over.”

For the herald’s voice is crying

in the desert far and near,

calling us to true repentance,

since the reign of God is here.

O, that warning cry obey!

Now prepare for God a way.

Let the valleys rise in meeting

and the hills bow down in greeting.

Straight shall be what long was crooked,

and the rougher places plain.

Let your hearts be true and humble,

as befits God’s holy reign.

For the glory of the Lord

now on earth is shed abroad,

and all flesh shall see the token

that God’s word is never broken.
