PRELUDE        No. 283

Come, O Holy Spirit, Come

Come, O Holy Spirit, come;

     (Holy Spirit, come.)
Come, almighty Spirit, come;

     (almighty Spirit, come.)

Come, come, come.

     (O Spirit, come.)

WELCOME

CALL TO WORSHIP

Wind of God, who awakened creation and stirred dry bones to life--

sweep through this space and enliven our worship.

Wind of God, who descended as tongues of flame

and gave birth to the church—

sweep through this space and ignite our hearts.

Wind of God, who guides our ministry and equips us for service—

sweep through this space and empower our witness.

OPENING HYMN  No. 290

O Day of Joy and Wonder!

O day of joy and wonder!
Christ’s promise now fulfilled:
the coming of the Spirit
that holy love has willed.
Our Lord in human body
to mortal eye is lost,
yet comes in flame upon us
at blessed Pentecost.

The world, in sheer amazement,
the truth must now declare:
that those who once were cowards
are brave beyond compare;
and tongues, which could not utter
their faith in Jesus’ name,
defy all persecution
God’s glory to proclaim!

We too may know your power;
your courage makes us strong.
Your love, your joy, your patience
can all to us belong.
Come now and dwell within us,
O Comforter divine.
Come to our hearts, and keep them;
there let your brightness shine.

CALL TO CONFESSION

On this day of Pentecost, we remember that God comes to those who are fearful and isolated to restore hope and bring new life.  Even as we shelter at home, let us celebrate the Spirit’s coming to open the locked doors of our hearts. Let us pray.

PRAYER OF CONFESSION

Spirit of wind and flame, blow open the doors we erect to keep ourselves sealed off from your world. We long to be set free from the fears that jail us and to be released from chains that bind us. We yearn to draw near to your source of living water, and to drink deeply from its well. We want to be cleansed in your holy fire, and to be driven into the streets by your winds of grace. Come to us, and heal us once more, Mighty Spirit, that we may embrace your gifts in service to a world in need. Amen.

In humility, let us lift our silent prayers to God for the brokenness of this world and for the needs of our community and our hearts.

Please refer to the deacon’s prayer list.

God, in your mercy, hear our prayers & forgive us. Amen.

ASSURANCE OF GOD WITH US

When God breathes the Holy Spirit into our lives, the earth is renewed. When God blesses us with gifts of this same Spirit, we too are renewed and made whole. Rejoice, sisters and brothers, God’s steadfast love endures forever.

SONG OF RESPONSE  No. 288

Spirit of the Living God

Spirit of the living God,

fall afresh on me.

Spirit of the living God,

fall afresh on me.

Melt me; mold me;

fill me; use me.

Spirit of the living God,

fall afresh on me.

SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

Renewed through the gifts of God’s Spirit, let us share our visions and dreams of peace by exchanging signs of Christ’s peace with one another.

The peace of Christ be with you all.

And also with you.

SONG OF RESPONSE  No. 286

Breathe on Me, Breath of God

Breathe on me, Breath of God;
fill me with life anew,
that I may love what thou dost love,
and do what thou wouldst do.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
until my heart is pure,
until with thee I will one will,
to do and to endure.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
till I am wholly thine,
until this earthly part of me
glows with thy fire divine.

Breathe on me, Breath of God,
so shall I never die,
but live with thee the perfect life
of thine eternity.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE

OUR GIFTS OF SACRIFICE and THANKSGIVING

We have been given a portion of the Spirit of God. Emboldened by the grace given to us, we give back to God a portion of the resources that God has given to us.

Thank you for sending your offerings.

They make a great difference to our church’s work in the world.

Thank you, too, for remembering the Two Cents a Meal Offering,

which goes toward hunger needs.

MUSICAL MEDITATION

Come Holy Spirit

by Jean Anne Shafferman

Come, come, come Holy Spirit come.

Fill me up, wash me clean,

set me free.

Like a dove,

come wingin’ into my soul.

Like a fire,

come burnin’, makin’ me whole.

Like a wind,

come rushin’, takin’ control.

Fill me up, wash me clean,

set me free.

Like a breath of heaven, fillin’ me.

Like the love of Jesus, savin’ me.

Like the grace of God, helpin’ me.

Fill me up, wash me clean,

set me free.

Come, come, come Holy Spirit come.

Fill me up, wash me clean,

set me free.

Hold me, mold me,

bend me fill-a my soul.

Shake me, break me,

mend me, make me whole.

Seize me, free me,

Spirit take control.

Fill me up, wash me clean,

set me free.

SONG OF RESPONSE   No. 709

God, We Honor You

God, we honor you.

God, we trust in you.

God, we worship and adore you.

Take what we bring, offered to you.

Teach us to show your abundant blessings.

Alleluia, alleluia, alleluia, amen.

PRAYER OF DEDICATION

We bring a wide variety of gifts to the table, O God, gifts which we have received by your grace. Take all we offer – our money, our time, our talents, our dreams, our hands, our hearts – and use them to make your Spirit’s presence felt in all the world. Amen.
