We Gather

CENTERING WORDS

Advent is a time of waiting, a time to open our hearts to God’s presence, a time to pay attention to God’s call. God’s love breaks in over and over again. Be awake, for God is near.

PRELUDE

LIGHTING OF THE ADVENT WREATH

We light this candle as a sign of the coming light of Christ, who is called the Son of the Most High,

and of whose kingdom there will be no end.

About the hour of Christ’s coming no one knows; therefore keep awake, for you do not know when the time will come.

Heaven and earth will pass away, but the Word of God endures forever.

ADVENT HYMN  No. 83

Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus

(Because the singing of hymns is discouraged during this period of pandemic, you are invited to meditate on verses 1 & 2 below.)

Come, thou long-expected Jesus,

born to set thy people free;

from our fears and sins release us;

let us find our rest in thee.

 Israel’s strength and consolation,

hope of all the earth thou art;

dear desire of every nation,

joy of every longing heart.

CALL TO PRAYERS

The prophet Isaiah speaks to people in pain, to people who feel far from God. We too, live in a hurting world and can only move forward in worship and our lives when we acknowledge that hurt. We call out to God and say what is sometimes hard to say.

PRAYERS OF CONFESSION & INTERCESSION

O God, come to us in our need.

Like a shepherd, you care for us. Like a potter, you shape our lives.

Faithful God, we are waiting for you.

Come down to us.

Come down to us as fire, and burn away the bonds that hold us back.

Light our spirits with your eternal love.

Shape us with your hands, that we may be vessels fit to receive your presence.

We are waiting, Holy One, and place our trust in your love.

Silence

You call us to wait, to watch, to be ready.

But we are so easily distracted, busily doing other things. We grow drowsy and complacent.

Give us wisdom, as we prepare for your coming.

Forgive our foolishness and our impatience.  Restore us by your grace.

Look upon us with your favor, that we might know your presence.

Shape us into vessels of blessing, for we are your children, longing to touch your Spirit. Amen.

Silence

ASSURANCE OF GOD WITH US

God is the potter who shapes our lives. God is the parent who loves us. We are the people of God--forgiven, loved, and freed.

SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

God calls you into fellowship with Jesus and with one another. God is faithful and will strengthen you and give you peace. Let us share this peace with our brothers and sisters. The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you!

And also with you.

OUR GIFTS OF SACRIFICE and THANKSGIVING

Invitation

We are not lacking any spiritual gift, for God’s abundant love supplies everything we need. As we wait for God this Advent season, let us bring the gifts of our lives: our money, our time, and our skills. God has given abundantly to us. Let us respond faithfully with gifts of joy.

Thank you for sending your offerings. They make a great difference to our church’s work in the world.

Musical Meditation

Prayer of Dedication

Generous and loving God, you give us everything we need. Surrounded and supported by your love, there is nothing we lack.

As we bring our offerings to you, may they support your work of peace and justice, and bring hope to the world. As we bring our very selves to you, mold and shape us as you will, then send us forth to serve. Amen.

ADVENT HYMN  No. 83

Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus

(Because the singing of hymns is discouraged during this period of pandemic, you are invited to meditate on verses 3 & 4 below.)

Born thy people to deliver,

born a child and yet a king,

born to reign in us forever,

now thy gracious kingdom bring.

By thine own eternal Spirit

rule in all our hearts alone;

by thine all-sufficient merit

raise us to thy glorious throne.
