We Gather

CENTERING WORDS

The heavens declare the glory of God, and the seas roar the wonder of the Lord.

PRELUDE

WELCOME and CALL TO WORSHIP

From north and south, from east and west, we come:

God's people called to the Table

where simple grace nourishes us.

From down the street to across town,

from single households to apartment dwellers:

God's people are called to community,

where we live and serve one another.

From every class, every race, every status;

from little ones with sippy cups to elders with overflowing hearts:

God's people are called to witness to God's hope,

to offer peace to a shattered world.

OPENING HYMN   No.396

Brethren, We Have Met to Worship

Because the singing of hymns is discouraged during this period of pandemic, you are invited to meditate on verses 1 & 4 below.)

Brethren, we have met to worship

and adore the Lord our God.

Will you pray with all your power

while we try to preach the word?

All is vain unless the Spirit

of the holy One comes down.

Brethren, pray, and holy manna

will be showered all around.

Let us love our God supremely;

let us love each other, too.

Let us love and pray for sinners

till our God makes all things new.

Christ will call us home to heaven;

at his table we’ll sit down.

Christ will gird himself and serve us

with sweet manna all around.

CALL TO PRAYERS

We are good at rules: making them and then breaking them. Paul reminds us that, when we gain Christ Jesus as our Lord and Savior, we receive exactly what we need - forgiveness, grace, hope. Let us confess our sins to God, that we might know God's healing love for us!

PRAYERS OF CONFESSION & INTERCESSION

If we were to name all the gods we have before you, Rock of Redemption, we would be here a very long time. We elevate politicians into saviors, though they are as broken as we are. We misuse your name so much during the day, we have trouble speaking to you in prayer at night. We are so busy, we do not notice how creation witnesses to your goodness and grace.

Forgive us, God our Hope. Help us to let go of what we value most, so we may open our emptiness, our hearts, our lives to the healing and loving presence of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior.

Let us lift our prayers to God for the brokenness of this world and for the needs of our community and our hearts.

(Please refer to the deacon’s prayer list in your bulletin.)

ASSURANCE OF GOD WITH US

Persistently, patiently, lovingly, God pours out grace and joy into our lives, healing our brokenness, forgiving our sin. Loved, we are sent to love; forgiven, we are freed to forgive; graced, we can offer our gifts to everyone we meet. Thanks be to God. Amen.

SHARING THE PEACE OF CHRIST

The heavens are telling the glory of God. Let us share in the joy of their heavenly song, as we exchange signs of Christ’s peace with one another. The peace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you!

And also with you.

PRAYER FOR ILLUMINATION

Holy Spirit, lift these words from the pages of scripture like the aroma of freshly baked bread. Help us to hunger for these words, to be fed by your grace, and to share what you offer with all of your children on this earth. Amen.

CELEBRATION OF THE LORD’S SUPPER

The Invitation

The Great Prayer of Thanksgiving

The scent of the Bread of Heaven has called us together.

For when we pray, a window to heaven is opened.

Let the joy of the feast to come fill you in this place.

For whenever we gather at this table,

we are filled to overflowing with God’s love.

The Holy Bread we share with each other,

for God’s gifts are for sharing.

In sharing with one another, we see the face of Christ. Let us worship God!

The Words of Institution

The Lord’s Prayer

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread; and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors; and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever. Amen.

The Communion

Musical Meditation

Prayer following Communion

We bless you, O God, for these gifts of bread and cup, and for sustaining us in hope every day of our lives. We pray for your strength to prepare us now for your service as we offer to you lives of witness and worship in the world you have made. Through Christ, our Lord. Amen.

OUR GIFTS OF SACRIFICE and THANKSGIVING

Invitation

Straining forward to what lies ahead, let us offer ourselves to God.

Thank you for sending your offerings. They make a great difference to our church’s work in the world. First Sunday loose plate offering benefits the Deacons Fund.

Musical Meditation

Prayer of Dedication

We can hoard the gifts with which you bless us, God of generosity, or we can share them with others.  May what we offer in these moments be the very blessing, the very hope, the very peace others need.  This we pray in the name of Jesus.  Amen.

We Will Go Out with Joy

(You are invited to meditate on the hymn below.)

We will go out with joy in the Spirit;

We will go out with joy in the Spirit;

we will go out with God.

Refrain:

Alleluia! We will go out with joy.

Alleluia! Alleluia!

Now anyone who’s born of the Spirit,

sing a new song of joy.

Now anyone who’s born of the Spirit,

sing a new song of joy. (Refrain)
